Boundless ANGER, Free.

NIGHT, a singularly American epic: the story of the black struggle for freedom in the South and the efforts of the elite and powerful to contain the rising opposition to their rule. When the African American and poor white communities of Jubilee, Alabama find that the power to change their fortunes lies in their unity, the current Mayor, Leroy Westfield, deploys every psychological, economic, and violent tool at his disposal to stem the tide. But he does not count on the new specter, the monster of his own making; the revenger of the innocent. He doesn’t count on NIGHT.

Coffey “Cuff” Freeman

Conformity isn’t an easy thing. It’s the only thing. Conform to keep breathin’. Stay off the sidewalk and keep livin’. Why don’t the others understand?

Cuff Freeman, the “Giant of Jubilee,” is a pot washer just trying to keep his head down. He lives by the notion that if you just keep to yourself you can die in your bed ‘stead of a tree like too many of Jubilee’s other negroes. But Jubilee’s rich and powerful have plans for Cuff and his lot… and there is no shortage of trees in Jubilee.

About The Authors

Deian Akande is a lover and writer of the science fiction genre who has a number of projects scheduled for publication in 2021. Deian and Julian came up with the idea for NIGHT in 2015 as they watched the 2016 presidential race and the revelation of deep-seated racial tensions in what many believed was a post-racial America. Deian’s philosophy in creating the story is to continually explore the space between what humans are and how we idealize ourselves.

Julian Clay has been a lover of the comic genre since childhood. Over time, that love evolved and drove him to obtain an education in visual arts and film with a focus on screenwriting and directing. When the idea for NIGHT came along, it was the perfect mesh of the visual and literary medium (not unlike film); an opportunity that perfectly matched Julian’s skills. Julian’s philosophy is that stories aren’t driven by plot alone, they’re driven by the unique combination of character and circumstance that allow an audience to ask the hard questions about the human condition, and maybe, discover some answers.
